Co-creating new options for the management of carbon sequestration, biodiversity and well-being outcomes in Helsinki forests

On the 14th February 2023, CO-CARBON researchers Dr Jussi Lampinen and Prof Christopher Raymond, together with Prof Mike Christie from Aberystwyth University, met with members of the Urban Space and Landscape Planning team, City of Helsinki, to present on and discuss how CO-CARBON research project’s social survey results could inform the management of carbon sequestration, biodiversity and well-being outcomes.  The results are timely to inform Helsinki’s draft Forest Management Strategy which will provide new guidelines for how forests across the municipality can be managed for multiple beneficial outcomes.

One of the major findings presented by Dr Lampinen is that there are significant spatial differences in the levels of public support and opposition for carbon and biodiversity outcomes.  Figure 1 below shows different types and areas of support for carbon outcomes across Helsinki.
