The article “Urban Greenery as Climate Action” by CO-CARBON researchers Ranja Hautamäki and Mari Ariluoma, published in Arkkitehti magazine, has received an honorable mention from the jury of the 2025 Urban Writing of the Year award. The jury’s reasoning was as follows:
“In addition to the main urban writing award, the jury wishes to give an honorable mention to a text that provides science-based knowledge to support planning in a concrete and accessible way. Such texts are needed and useful in practical planning work. The article is clear both linguistically and visually, and it is grounded in scientific knowledge. Addressing one of the major societal challenges of our time—climate change—the article brings the topic from the strategic level to practical application in the urban context. It highlights the possibilities of carbon sequestration and their implementation in urban environments through concrete examples and research findings.”
The award is selected annually by the scientific societies that organize the national Urban Studies Conference. The main prize is awarded to the best scientific article written in Finnish in the field of urban studies. This year, the main prize was awarded to Riina Lundman’s article “Towards a More Neurodiverse City: Foundations for More Equal and Neuroinclusive Urban Planning”, published in Terra.
